Question:Why do some foods have preservatives while others don’t?

Claim: Some foods have preservatives while others don’t.

Evidence: There are many foods that need preservatives, this includes cheese, jam, jelly, pickles, sliced fruit, wine etc. Each of these food items need preservatives to stay fresh . There are also some that don’t have preservatives including grains, eggs, dairy, nuts, and seeds. Meat, fish, eggs, and diary use refrigeration as a method of preserving the food. Other foods such as potatoes, onions, and carrots  don’t even need refrigeration to stay fresh.

Reasoning:There are different types of food that need preservatives, this is due to how they might spoil quickly or become moldy.  For example c heese used to have sorbic acid, which is a natural compound found in fruit that is often synthetically manufactured from Ketene Gas for commercial use. Quite recently Kraft said that they were removing artificial flavor, such as Sorbic Acid from American and White American cheese slices as reported by abcnews.org. This shows that some foods don’t have preservatives, for example  meat & fish some types of cheese don’t have preservatives. Foods that have meat and fish use a method of preservation which is refrigeration. In the article (science.howstuffworks.com) it states that some foods have preservatives while others don’t because they might destroy enzymes naturally found in food because it might spoil or discolor quicker.

Rebuttal: All foods have preservatives

Evidence: Most food we eat have  preservatives but that doesn't necessarily mean all foods do. This is a statement that is proven to be false. We say this because  some foods such as grains, eggs , dairy, nuts , and seeds don’t use preservatives.

Reasoning: This is showing that most of the foods we eat have preservatives but there are also foods that don't. Most foods have preservatives because they might destroy enzymes naturally found in food, causing it to spoil or discolor quicker. However, some foods may not need preservatives because they do not spoil as quickly as other foods that need preservatives.
