Are most food products produced with genetic engineering?

Class: 744                                          Date: February,6,2017                              Mrs. Goldfisher                      IS125

Claim: Most food products are produced with genetic engineering.

Evidence:. A GMO is a genetically modified organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering. Usually, GMO’s have been altered with DNA from another organism which is sometimes transgenic organisms. An example of GMO is golden rice. Golden rice is a genetically modified rice that contains a large amount of vitamin A. Many foods contain GMO’s, making the product look better or taste better than they should.Another type of Genetic Engineering is that a  majority of corn, soy, canola, and sugar beets grown in the United States are now genetically engineered, and they are often used as ingredients in processed foods. The food industry is also pushing to further expand the use of genetic engineering.Over 70% of processed foods that are found in retail stores and restaurants, contain ingredients derived from genetically engineered corn, soybeans, canola, and cotton. In addition, half the sugar used in food products comes from genetically modified sugar beets .

Reasoning: This proves that most products are now produced with genetic engineering because more than 70% of processed foods contain genetically modified foods.

Rebuttal: Very few products are produced or grown with genetic engineering.

Claim 2:  Very few food products are  grown with genetic engineering. Some food  products, such as corn, Hawaiian papaya, zucchini, yellow summer squash, edamame are grown naturally so,they are healthier than other products made with genetic engineering or also known as GMO. Many parents might be surprised to find out they've been feeding their infants GMOs. Both milk and soy products regularly show up the ingredient list for baby foods. In America, according to the Non-GMO Project, 94% of all soy is genetically modified. Meanwhile, 88% of the corn fed to cows contains GMOs, meaning that such organisms are part of the food chain that ends with milk being produced and fed to infants. GMOs pose particular health risks to infants. This shows that claim 2 is wrong, since most foods, even ones we don’t realize somehow have them,  are made with GMOs.
