Once a year, go someplace you've never been before--Dalai Lama

Every year, I follow that advice. I pick a place I have never been, and plan a journey around it: fancy hotels, local foods, historical sites and museums. I try never to repeat myself, because there is so much to see and only so much time to see it. I take my daughters as my fellow travellers, and we support each other both mentally and physically as we leave our comfort zone. I hope they are as enriched as I am at the journey. I like this quote from Todd Kasdan's article The Mental Benefits of Vacationing Somewhere New : "But as a psychologist, I believe that travel should routinely be used to achieve the opposite: to get out of your comfort zone, expose yourself to uncertainty, and eschew rest for exploration and learning. The result is personal growth — greater emotional agility, empathy, and creativity."
